Food Fight is an effort to recognize and combat state violence against the migrant community in New York City. We reject the current neo-liberal trajectory that devitalizes mutual aid/food distros rendering them impotent in even understanding the source of what makes food distribution necessary.
We are a group of self-organized individuals dedicated to feeding our community members.
Food Fight is an effort to recognize and combat state violence against the migrant community in New York City.
The fact that the basic needs of the people are not met and can not be met in this current world is a direct result of racial capitalism, imperialism and colonialism. This is particularly true for migrants in our communities, fleeing the Third World and then arriving to the u.s settler colony without the ability to survive. This is why we engage in learning from those surviving and their actual experiences– to go beyond serving meals and struggle towards a different world.
Food Fight distributes material needs including food, clothing, hygiene products, shoes, and more to the migrant community at the Jefferson shelter in Brooklyn. We serve around 400 community members per day, and distribute food at least twice a week. Without a central kitchen, we operate out of community spaces, volunteer’s and friend’s home kitchens, often coordinating meal prep, pickups and dropoffs between multiple spaces with 2-3 cars. All funds and materials are donated. We constantly organize within the community to receive food, produce and supply donations, yet weekly, we only receive about 400 dollars in donations, while spending almost 600 dollars on supplies. Food Fight is a political space. Outside of the distribution of material needs and legal and financial resources, we are in constant conversation with the community in and outside of the shelter about mutual aid, state repression, and political education on a global scale. Any donations would be valuable in finding us a consistent space to cook, and to purchase essential items for our community.
